Lust is a Sin. What??!!

First, I want to say thanks for all the comments, emails, and PMs yesterday telling me how much you loved the cover of Sex Magick.  Your positive feedback made my day.  Truly!!!

Okay, I never really thought about this until recently, but did you know lust is a sin in some major religions?  Wow, talk about a killjoy.  I took a “Seven Deadly Sins” test online a few days ago.  Here are the results.  I scored 100% for the sin of lust (no surprise there, right?).  And 0% for the other six sins.  Again, no surprise, since the other six sins are just too boring compared to lust, meaning I have no interest in them.  According to the test, I have a 14% chance of going to Hell because of this.  And I will probably die happily in the throws of passion.  Hey, sounds good to me!  *lusty grin*

This test just reminds me how happy I am to be Pagan.  Pagans are lusty people, and it’s okay to be that way.  We even have holidays (Sabbats) devoted to lust (Beltane comes immediately to mind…ya know, the Maypole, etc.), as well as several lusty Gods and Goddesses.  My Patron Goddess is the Egyptian Cat Goddess, Bast, who is the Goddess of Sensual Delights.  Yeah, Bast and I get along just fine.  Two peas in a pod for sure!

Back to lust.  After another weekend of smoking hot sex, I realized I am absolutely addicted to my husband’s body.  No doubt about it.  It’s like my Lust Meter is stuck on “GO,” and my “OFF switch” no longer exists.  In fact after my husband and I recovered from that round we had to laugh.  We started dating in 1978 and were married in 1979.  We never imagined over thirty years later we’d still be rolling around between the sheets like a couple of college kids.  But you know what makes this possible, don’t you?  That’s right.  Lust.  Like I’ve said in earlier blog posts, it’s a major ingredient in our marriage, and I highly recommend it.

I guess that makes me a sinner.  Oh, well.  But that also means I’ll probably die happily in the throws of passion.  ALRIGHTYYYY!!  Am I one lucky sinner, or what?!!  *wicked grin*

It is an odd thing how in some religions sex is a sin. I mean obviously not a complete sin seeing how we need it to procreate, but it’s such a taboo subject. I know growing up in a Christian home, sex wasn’t ever talked about and it seems like it’s looked down upon even for married people. Like it’s just for making babies!

I just don’t get it…how can you not want to do that? How can you ignore the lust and the urges? Ok, being so lustful that you’ll sleep with ANYONE and not worry about consequences is not safe or healthy. But to ignore sexual urges while in a committed relationship doesn’t make sense!

I just don’t understand where this thinking came from. It’s almost like someone somewhere along the line felt like any kind of pleasure, luxury or indulgence was a sin. And I just can’t for the life of me figure out why!!

I used to get dragged to my friend’s church growing up. It was very much hell, fire and brimstone, for want of a better phrase. And enough to scare my then fourteen year old self silly. Think that’s partly too why I became a Pagan years later. I follow my own path…it’s a tad eclectic; but then so am I and that suits me fine.

Ha! I can relate. I always warn my apprentices that I am verrrrrry eclectic and not like most HPs. Then if they want to join a coven later in their studies they won’t suffer from culture shock. I know from experience I much more liberal than most in Wicca and Faery. But that’s no surprise, right? It’s just the Fey part of me (naughty grin).

It’s patriarchy. But I have no problem with that. I’ve spent years and years studying all the major religions and some of the minor ones because that kind of thing fascinates me.

So I undertand completely where it comes from. It’s just not my thing. I’m much to happy being a Lost in Lust (wicked grin).

    Hi Laura,

Yes, I’ve noticed, now that I don’t adhere to any patriarchal church that I’ve definitely got my libido back. Since their emphasis is only on procreation, it makes you wonder why they “sanction” any sex that doesn’t lead to the possibility of children. I think they would if they could!! Repression takes all the joy out of life, especially when it’s a perfectly natural things we human animals enjoy. Studying paganism has definitely opened my eyes to that.

I agree. It’s the whole package, isn’t it? When a spiritual woman finds a spiritual path that believes her body is a good thing rather than an evil thing, then not only does her body image improve but her libido responds as well. Thank goodness for the Goddess!!

One thing’s for sure. Pagans reallllly know how to have FUN! *naughty grin*

“When a spiritual woman finds a spiritual path that believes her body is a good thing rather than an evil thing, then not only does her body image improve but her libido responds as well.”

You know that’s the absolute truth. Constantly being told that our thoughts, bodies, and lusts are evil shuts down all those receptors that seem to miraculously open when acceptance and affirmation enter the picture. Someone who admires your body for what it is, is a huge confidence booster!

    Re: lustier

That’s exactly what I was thinking about when I said that. The awesome thing about Pagan faiths and the Goddess is the acceptance of a woman’s body for it feminine attributes, meaning “curves” are a good thing for a change. The Goddess as a plus-size or super-size woman is OKAY. Women’s bodies are not thrust into the super-model-thin mode of acceptance.

Now that’s not to say if you are thin that’s a bad thing either. What I’m saying is no matter what shape your body is naturally, that is okay in many Pagan faiths because a woman’s body is “sacred.” That “sacredness” is something that is missing from patriarchal religions who glorify men.

Which is a cool thing really. I like the fact that there are religions for women and religions for men, and in this country we get to choose which works best for us. Yup, life is good!
