Sex or No Sex? This is the Question
I was talking to my agent last week, and he thought I should change the subject of my blog posts. No, I’m not kidding.
“For the last six months you’ve mostly blogged about your sex life, your relationship with Wes, irritating Alphas, sex toys, and sex stuff,” he says. “Maybe your readers are tired of hearing about sex? Maybe your sex posts are driving people away and hurting your book sales?”
“Huh?” I respond. “Have you read my blog posts from 2008?”
“Of course not!” he exclaims. “Like when do I have the time?”
“I ask cause I haven’t been writing about sex for just the last six months,” I reply. “I’ve been writing about it since the Fall of 2008.”
“Really?”
“Yeah,” I confirm. “I started this blog at LiveJournal in June of 2008. I blogged about the novel I was currently writing and the novels I was reading. I would talk about the scenes I was working on.” I shrug. “I had a small following. But in September I started writing about my sex life and all the kinky stuff I love. The number of people reading and commenting on my blog skyrocketed and so did my book sales.”
“Hmm,” he murmurs.
“I mixed the sex stuff with empowering posts for women, and I’ve done that ever since,” I continue. “This is a hot blog. Why mess with a good thing?”
“I still think you should consider it,” he insists.
“Let me ask you something. Do you read my Twitter tweets and my Facebook status updates?”
“No,” he replies. “Like when do I have the time?!”
I roll my eyes. “Well, all the novelist stuff is in those tweets,” I say. “Ya know, what chapter I’m currently working on. If I have a conference call or a techy training session. Or if you’re driving me bat shit, and I’m hiding out from you. Ya know, the usual life-of-a-novelist stuff.”
“You say that about me?” he asks, horrified.
“Of course, I do,” I reply. “Especially if you’re pissing me off. You’re one of the Alphas in my life, so I consider you fair game. Besides, my readers love it. And you know how much I looooove to make my readers happy.”
Okay, I’m laughing like crazy now.
Unfortunately, I don’t think he’s convinced. So I’m asking you, my readers, are you tired of the sexy posts on this blog? Are you bored with Wes and how that particular Alpha ends up in the doghouse on a regular basis? Are my kinky, slutty posts a total snooze? Would you rather I dump that stuff and just talk about the current novel I’m writing and how my agent drives me up a fucking wall sometimes? LMAO
Before I go any further, let me say this. Every time a new book comes out (like my vamp series) I run blog posts from time to time featuring some of those reviews and interviews. I’ve always done that. In fact reviews are already coming out, and it looks like this new vamp series is a major hit. So don’t freak when you see them and think this blog changed overnight. It hasn’t. Yet.
Okay, back to my question: Sex or no sex on this blog?
Time to speak up and tell me what you think. My agent is a numbers guy. That’s all he pays attention to. If more people comment on this blog post and say they want this blog to go PG with book stuff then that’s what will happen. Or if you want it to stay sexy and X-rated and you like my posts just the way they are, post a comment and say so. Time to stand up and be counted.
Like I said, my agent is a numbers guy. With him the majority RULES.

My two cents for "the agent" who doesn't have time to read your blog and whatnot. This "numbers" alpha sounds like he NEEDS to be reading your blog or something else to loosen up a little! I have to say that Laura Stamps, big or small, NYTimes Bestseller or not, has always been "real" and that is what I respect the most about her. Laura is always approachable on Twitter, Facebk ,email, where ever and that is what sets her apart from many authors who tend to be cliquish or refuse contact with you regardless of how much you sing their praises or promote their work. Do I want to hear mindless rattle from Laura about what chapter she's working on and how behind she is and how she's drinking her coffee after Wes leaves for work? Hell no! I like that she tells us about her "real" life, flaws and all. I like knowing she can whip Wes in the doghouse when he's being an ass. I like seeing her hard work and dedication to her craft with plenty of real life smut in between. So do I think she should go from Sex to Abstinence updating? A big fat NO!!! Keep it real! Keep it sexy! Keep it Laura!

OK…your alpha/agent man doesnt get out much does he?Cause I read loads of author blogs/facebook/myspace(,twitter no so much)BUT they are all basically the same.They talk about kids,weather,pets,chapters,cooking,get togethers,others blogs,books they've read, sometimes even *gasp* sexy men pics and boring everyday life stuff.Now thats fine and dandy but come on! Its BORING!!!! I read to get away from all that boring stuff.You write what I cant/dont say out loud.Thats why I keep coming back,I want to see what Wes has done this time or what goofy logic your alpha agent had to say to one of your ideas It feels great to know someone else is dealing with alpha men.The other blogs etc I follow I just glance at and look for key words of interest,your blog? Its the first one I look for and read cause I know you'll either make me laugh out loud or shake my head in sympathy.I wish more authors would say it like it is and stop flowering up what they really mean.Dont change a thin,g your blog is perfect the way it is.Its the alpha agent who needs to rethink things,tell him 'here's your hat.What's your hurry and dont let the door hit you on your arse on the way out!'

I agree Rozonda. No matter what I go through, whether it's light fun or heavy stuff (Wes's divorce fuck-up comes immedately to mind *lol*) I try to put a humorous spin on it. Present it in a way that helps others move past it if they are dealing with serious issues too. This month has been full of intense stuff for me. But like I was just telling Wes in the car you can't let outside circumstances determine your moods. I won't allow anything to play me that way. Ok so im a day late on this, but as you can see from the responce on this you have a blog that is loved. I dont think ppl only want the sex that you put out write about. They want what they see as a author (and friend) that is very open with her life and tells all. With that they can be just as open right back. So if they like or dont like what you say or do, they will just tell you, because you welcome them being just as open. So you have a very different way of doing your blog from the other authors out their, I think its what we all like about you and your writings. If your pub. wants you to bring more ppl in by changing you and what you do, he does not really now YOU!!
As they say "You can please some of the ppl some of the time, but not all the ppl all of the TIME".
